Assam: First model district health project launched
Country’s first Model District Health Project has been launched in Morigaon district of Assam. The project has been launched in collaboration of the Earth Institute of Columbia University and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Launching the ambitious project at a function in Dispur yesterday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the model district health project would aim at reducing infant and maternal mortality rates by 2015. Speaking on the occasion, senior adviser of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, Dr. Nirupam Bajpai said Morigaon in Assam is among the five districts in the country to have been selected under the model district health project. Dr. Bajpai, who has been honoured with Padmashree Award, said the mission aims at reaching out to 600 million people in the country through interventions in a better and effective way. Terming the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) as the biggest public health programme in the world, Dr. Bajpai said the project would address other key health issues.

Kalpana Devi Thoudam becomes first Indian judoka to clinch World Cup medal
Kalpana Devi Thoudam has become the first Indian judoka to clinch a World Cup medal by grabbing a bronze in the below 52kg category in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The World Cup, which concluded yesterday, is the official event of the International Judo Federation and one of the Olympic Qualifying events. About 100 judokas from 17 Countries participated in this event.
She earlier won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Singapore and was an Asian junior champion two years ago. Besides, she is also a reigning national champion

First Annual India - Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment

| The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Anand Sharma, co-chaired the First Annual India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment in Ottawa, Canada on 24th September, 2010 with the Canadian Minister of International Trade, Mr. Peter Van Loan. The Indian delegation for the Dialogue also comprised the Commerce Secretary, Dr. Rahul Khullar along with other senior government officials. While reviewing Canada-India bilateral trade and investment relations, the Ministers encouraged the continued strengthening of economic ties between the two countries. The Ministers agreed that there is significant potential for sustained growth in trade and investment flows between the two countries, and reiterated their Prime Ministers’ commitment to increasing trade from the current level of $ 4.5 billion to $ 15 billion annually in the next five years. During the meeting, the Ministers released the Canada-India Joint Study Group Report that examined the feasibility of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA). They welcomed the Joint Study Group recommendation that negotiations be initiated towards a substantive and ambitious CEPA to the mutual benefit of each Party. The Ministers looked forward to the early signing followed by ratification and implementation of the Social Security Agreement. They noted that the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement was under negotiation and looked forward to its early conclusion. These two agreements will make a significant contribution to the commercial and economic interaction between the two countries. Under the umbrella of the Ministerial Dialogue, both sides agreed in principle to establish working groups on PPP model, focussing on infrastructure, Energy, Mining, Agro-processing, ICT and Education. Both the Ministers also looked forward, signing Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Road Transportation later this year. The Ministers also reviewed the current status of bilateral cooperation in critical sectors such as energy, environment, mining, information and communication technology, science and technology, education and training, tourism, financial and other services, agriculture, and infrastructure. They noted the opportunities for private sector to work together in these sectors in third markets. The Ministers also underlined the importance of greater contact between Canadian and Indian businesses. In this regard, both sides agreed to expedite the establishment of a Canada-India CEO Forum, a high level representative body that would recommend policy initiatives and identify impediments to the enhancement of investment and trade between the two countries. Shri Anand Sharma also met the Industry Ministry of Canada, Mr. Tony Clement, both the Ministers stressed upon the need to enhance investment and technological collaboration between businesses in the two countries. Shri Anand Sharma, addressed the India Canada CEO Roundtable meeting, jointly organised by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Confederation of Indian Industry. Tagore Commemoration Grant Scheme-2010
To celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath
Tagore, Government of India has constituted a National Committee under
the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister and a National Implementation
Committee under the Finance Minister, to plan and take up
commemorative programmes and projects at the national and
international level. The National Committee has also advised the
Ministry of Culture to support initiatives by different organizations
to conduct appropriate commemorative programmes. The National
Implementation Committee, thereafter, decided that the Ministry of
Culture may launch a scheme and accordingly, the Ministry of Culture
now launches the ‘Scheme of Financial Assistance for Cultural
Programmes by Not-for-Profit Organizations to Commemorate 150 Years of
Rabindranath Tagore’, known in short as the ‘Tagore Commemoration
Grant Scheme’ (TCGS). The Scheme will assist and support the
programmes related to appropriate and befitting commemoration of the
multifaceted genius of Rabindranath Tagore and his enduring
contributions. These may be through lectures, seminars, workshops,
symposia, cultural shows, literary festivals, exhibitions, small
documentary films and audio-video presentations, etc. All eligible Not-for-Profit Organizations working for the promotion of
art and culture and Universities (including University’s Centres and
Institutions, but not University Departments, schools or colleges) are
eligible to apply for this Grant. Central Government assistance is
limited to 75% of the estimated cost of a proposal/programme, with a
ceiling of Rs. 5 lakhs. The Scheme shall remain open till May 2012. Applications can be sent to the Conveners of the 8 Zonal Tagore
Commemoration Committees, with offices at Kolkata, Guwahati,
Allahabad, Delhi, Chandigarh, Udaipur, Mumbai and Chennai. Experts
will evaluate the proposals and their decision will be final.
